Flash Movie Review: Eight Below
My love of animals came from Maxine’s unconditional love, my aunt’s French Poodle. Even if you have not experienced that type of love from a pet, I feel you will still connect with this amazing story and fall in love with the dogs in this movie. The acting from the cast, such as Paul Walker as Jerry Shepard (The Fast and the Furious, 2 Fast 2 Furious) or Bruce Greenwood as Davis McClaren (Star Trek, Deja Vu) is not worth talking about, it is mediocre. The real stars of this movie are the huskies and they will quickly get under your skin. Inspired by a true story, Jerry the sled dogs’ trainer, must leave the canines behind, as the polar base must be quickly evacuated, due to a fast approaching Antarctic heavy storm. Promising his furry friends he will return after the storm, Jerry Shepard is confronted with complications that prevent him from keeping his word. Will the dogs be able to survive on their own? My attention was drawn to the plight of these brave huskies. Watching this story unfold, one will see the courage, the bravery, the deepest love that drives us to do whatever it takes to help the ones we love.

Flash Movie Review: Flame & Citron
With the flair of Bonnie & Clyde and the closeness of Thelma & Louise, Flame & Citron were assassins in the Danish resistance during Nazi occupation. Flammen, played by Thure Lindhardt (Angels & Demons, Into the Wild), was the red haired shooter; while Citron, played by Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale, Clash of the Titans), was the driver. Targeting Danish Nazi sympathizers at first, a curious shift unfolded as they are suddenly being told to assassinate specific Germans. Add a mysterious woman who could be a double agent, along with a traitor in their inner circle; the layers of this story were kept tight and focused. There were some beautiful scenes, that had a topcoat of film noir style. The suspense, I felt, ebbed and flowed in subtle shifts, demanding my constant attention. Based on true events, essentially this is a war movie; however, I have to tell you, it was one of the more beautifully stylized movies I have seen about World War II. Danish/German with English subtitles.

Flash Movie Review: Machete
I pushed the DVD into the player with some trepidation. This was not a movie I was looking forward to seeing, since I am not fond of bloody scenes. My reason for viewing this film was its director, Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Once Upon a Time in Mexico); so, I decided to view this DVD on an empty stomach. The story is about Machete Cortez, played by Danny Trejo (Griindhouse, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D) as an ex-federale, hired to assassinate a Texas senator. Just as he was about to complete his job, he discovers he has been set up to be killed. From that point on, Machete goes on a bloody killing spree of revenge against the man who hired him. In real life, Danny was a drug addict who had been in and out of jail for 11 years, spending time in San Quentin. So when I say he was a bad ass in this movie, he was a crazy bad ass. The scenes in Mr Rodriguez’ directing style are so over the top, that I actually did not have a problem watching this movie and got a kick out it. Maybe it has something to do with the revenge angle or the perfect co-stars of Jessica Alba (Sin City, Fantastic Four) and Michelle Rodriguez (Avatar, The Fast & the Furious). Who knew killing could be so much fun. If you can handle the violence and blood, this is a wild movie to watch from Robert Rodriguez.

Flash Movie Review: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
First I have to say I have not read the book; so, I am not sure my experience would have been the same if I had read this best selling novel by Stieg Larsson. Secondly, I loved this movie. From the moment it started, with an engaging score done by Trent Reznor, scene after scene played out in multi layered tensions. Rooney Mara (The Social Network, Youth in Revolt) as Lisbeth Salander had the intensity of a troubled soul who could easily burst apart at any moment. There is a possibility she could get an Oscar nod from the academy for this role. Hired for her investigative and computer hacking skills by Daniel Craig (Casino Royale, Munich), who portrays the journalist Mikael Blomkvist, the two try to solve the mystery of a woman who disappeared 40 years ago. I thought the 2 1/2+ hours would be a concern for me; but it was not an issue, as I was completely absorbed by the story. Even a couple of scenes that normally I would look away from, did not deter me from taking in each subtle twist of this thrilling mystery.

Flash Movie Review: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
When I saw the trailer for this movie, I could not wait to see it. Not having read the John le Carre book, I still expected to be fully involved in the story. Unfortunately, the big surprise for me, was the dullness of this film. There were solid actors in the cast, such as John Hurt (V for Vendetta, Alien) as Control; Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight, Harry Potter franchise) as George Smiley and Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, A Single Man) as Bill Haydon. The film had a great look to it, the period being the cold war during the 1970’s. Sadly, I simply felt some of the scenes were executed poorly and the script was weak. The story has to do with Britain’s intelligence agency having a Russian mole, who might be deeply planted inside of its high ranking personnel. With a cast ensemble such as this one; if there was a good script, this movie could have been a good, cerebral challenge, that would have had the audience on the edge of their seats. I do want to point out that there were some scenes which were well done. Just why couldn’t there be more? After viewing this movie, I do not know if I will read the book.

Flash Movie Review: Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
Check you common sense and reasoning at the door, this was strictly a sensory movie. The first 30 minutes dragged for me, not being a fan of the quick cut fighting scenes. Also, I did not like the 1st Sherlock Holmes movie and had no expectations here. With that being said, I have to tell you I enjoyed the performances of Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. Me thinks there was more to their bromance and the director, Guy Ritchie, wanted us to be aware of it. For me, I felt he was pandering to the audience. Since I did not have to think much; I have to say, the movie certainly went for the auditory and visual stimulation. I loved the soundtrack as it did not intrude, but helped carry the scenes in an even rhythm. There were enough explosions to make one feel they were at a demolition site–of a mid-sized town. Some of the shots (scenes I mean, not gunfire) were exciting, with a cutting edge, even though the story took place in the late 1800’s. Big, expansive outdoor scenes showed the director’s attention to detail and I appreciated it. The movie was a cat and mouse game as Sherlock Holmes was trying to prevent Professor James Moriarty (Jared Harris) from starting a world war. As an interesting side note; the female lead, Noomi Rapace, starred in the original movie of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It was an excellent casting call. So, for an easy on the brain, strong on the eyes movie; this would be one to see.

Flash Movie Review: The Skin I Live In
With certain directors, after a time, one expects to see familiar traits: the way a scene is presented; the pacing of it or the way the director tells the story through his camera lens. In this regards, Pedro Almodovar does not disappoint… for the most part. Antonio Banderas plays a successful plastic surgeon. Having created an artificial skin, he has been testing it on a woman he keeps captive. At one point, I was getting a physical reaction to what I was watching on screen and it was not from the scenes that had blood in them. It was more about the subject matter and the characters’ reactions. Even though individual scenes were well done, I felt a disconnect between scenes which caused the movie to drag for me. However, this movie does set a new high standard for what it means to take revenge. Spanish with English subtitles.

Flash Movie Review: In Time
I was grateful to the director for shooting a majority of the movie in dark subdued lighting. It was easier to sit and watch this bad film. The story line intrigued me: people do not age past 25 years. However, they have the means to buy more time to live. In actuality, what I watched made no sense, filled with poor acting. What was Justin Timberlake thinking? He was on a decent run of movie roles; didn’t he read this script? This film was simply boring. The only bright spot for me was seeing the old classic cars, that were used in this dreary futuristic setting.

Flash Movie Review: The Debt
I liked the idea behind this movie and it started out well. A trio of Mossad agents are on a mission to capture a Nazi doctor who performed horrible experiments on prisoners. The mission takes an unexpected turn and the 3 must keep a secret, that plagues them 30 years later. I always love Helen Mirren but I could not take my eyes off of Jessica Chastain — good acting chops on this one. The last half of the movie was a big disappointment for me and I felt the ending was a cop out.
